Hermione Granger is first described as bossy and is seen to be in firm disapproval of rule-breaking. However, upon becoming friends with Harry Potter and Ron Weasley she very quickly loosens up and becomes lenient about rule-breaking, as she breaks a few rules on her own in the series. She is shown to be fiercely loyal to her friends, and continually supports them all in their various struggles. She helped Harry form Dumbledore's Army in their fifth year, a Defense Against the Dark Arts club where students could learn how to actually perform defensive spells in secrecy, as the Ministry of Magic appointed professor firmly opposed anything beyond learning the theory of the spells as a way of curbing what the Ministry thought to be lies about the return of Voldemort. This could be Hermione's biggest opposition of authority to date, as she took a big risk in helping Harry to form the covert group, not only jeopardizing her school career but potentially jeopardizing her career after Hogwarts, since it can be assumed that it's necessary to go through the Ministry to get any kind of job that Hermione might be interested in.

She's also incredibly bright (she said that the Sorting Hat almost placed her in Ravenclaw before deciding on Gryffindor), always performing astoundingly in her classes and achieving top marks in just about everything. She earned eleven O.W.L.s after sitting the tests at the end of her fifth year: ten Outstandings (Care of Magical Creatures, Transfiguration, Potions, Charms, Herbology, Astronomy, History of Magic, Arithmancy, Ancient Runes and one unknown class) and one Exceeds Expectations (Defense Against the Dark Arts). She was also usually the first student in the DA meetings to fully perform the spells and charms Harry was teaching. She was made a Prefect along with Ron in her fifth year and maintained that position in her sixth year. She's also probably the only student in her year to have read Hogwarts: A History and constantly quotes it.

When it comes to her personal life, Hermione does not seem to have had vast experience with the opposite sex. She does, however, manage to catch the eye of a few select boys, namely Viktor Krum and Ron Weasley. She meets Viktor, a world famous Quidditch player and student (at the time) at Durmstrang Academy of Magic, in her fourth year and we see that Viktor appears to be smitten with her, as he frequently shows up in the library when she's in there and finally asks her to go to the Yule Ball with him, although this could also be because she's maybe the only girl who doesn't fawn all over him. Their relationship seems to be one of just friends now, but we can see the effect that Hermione's relationship with Viktor has on Ron. The relationship between Hermione and Ron intensifies in the fifth and sixth books, and the attraction between the two of them is obvious to the reader but Ron seems to be oblivious to Hermione's feelings, and possibly to his own. We see Ron and Hermione each date other people in Half-Blood Prince as a way to make each other jealous but the end of the book shows the true testament of their feelings for each other.

Hermione Granger is currently portrayed by Emma Watson in the Harry Potter series of films.
